What are their woodworking interests?
The first thing to consider when purchasing a gift for a woodworker is the type of woodworking they enjoy. You can probably find out the answer to this question just by asking them or someone that might know. To help you identify their interests; the most common types of woodworking are: furniture making, carving, woodturning, scroll sawing, intarsia, etc. 

Often woodworkers will start out with one of these woodworking categories and expand to others as they develop their skills. Many woodworkers that have years of experience will then settle into one or two woodworking disciplines and specialize in these areas.

How big is their woodworking shop? Do they have a shop?
Another thing to consider is the size of their shop. Some woodworking projects such as carving can be practiced in the smallest of apartments with minimal expense and noise. Other woodworking disciplines, such as furniture making, require a minimum of a garage-size shop and a number of large power tools.

What is their woodworking skill level? Beginner? Intermediate? Advanced?
The second consideration is their skill level. Are they just starting out in woodworking?

Beginner Level Gifts:
Beginning woodworkers need knowledge first, tools second. You might consider educational products such as woodworking books or even better – woodworking videos. The nice thing about giving woodworking videos is that they are a lot less common than books and the chances of duplicating something they already have is a lot less.
