20) Now it's time to glue that pile of wood
together.
A) We will start by gluing the top and the middle
inside the two sides of the clock frame.
B) Next we will glue the front piece of molding in place. It is very
important that you have test fit the molding to make sure it is cut properly. The molding
should come down enough to almost cover the front of the top board. This edge and the stop
block we glued in place earlier should provide the molding with plenty of support. Because
of the molding's shape it can be difficult to clamp. If you use a piece of scrap molding
placed in reverse it will be easier to clamp.
C) After the front molding has dried we will place the side molding
pieces in place. Clamping these little pieces can be quite difficult. Here is the solution
we found.
D) Cover the top 1/3 of the miter with superglue (CA Glue) and the bottom
2/3 with wood glue. Place the molding in place and hold for a couple of minutes. The
superglue will bond it in place and the wood glue will keep it there permanently. Be
careful not to apply too much wood glue or it will ooze into the superglue when you press
the moldings together.
E) Now put a couple of drops of glue on each of the stop blocks and press
the face into place. Position it so that the gaps are even all around it and clamp in
place.
F) Slip the plywood into place and glue the bottom to the frame. Note:
The plywood should fit snugly in place and not need to be glued. If it is loose apply a
little glue in ONE corner.
21) You should let everything sit for a while to dry (see
glue bottle for recommended time).
A) After the clock has dried lightly sand all exposed parts until you
have a smooth finish.
B) Wipe the clock down with denatured alcohol and
then sand again with a very fine steel wool.
C) Apply a thin coat of Watco Danish Oil Finish or finish as you like.
Note: Rags soaked in Watco have been known to spontaneously combust. Dispose of rags
according to manufacturer's instructions.
D) Allow the clock to dry and re-apply finish as needed.
E) Insert the movement according to the manufacturer's directions.
F) Put the brass face-plate in place and affix in each corner with small
brass screws.
Good luck. After you build the
clock let us know how it went! |
